Electrical and Communication Divsion

Aartco has been involved in high voltage cable and substation projects since its inception in 1978. The firm initially took the role of subcontractor with Japanese, American and European main contractors. Since 1981, it has performed the same activity as main contractor for SEC-EOA, Saudi Aramco and others. Since 1986, it has performed cable jointing and terminations on Cross Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) cables with its own specialist personnel and equipment. The service was extended to include Low Pressure Oil Filled (LPOF) cables in 1987. When SEC-EOA adopted Fiber Optic Cable as its standard for telecommunication systems in 1991, Aartco added this specialty by hiring technicians with this skill and purchasing the necessary equipment and tools.

During 1986, Aartco signed contracts with both SEC-EOA and Saudi Aramco for the emergency repair of XLPE and LPOF cables in their systems, from 69kV up to 380kV. Since that time, Aartco has been the primary provider of such maintenance and repair service in the Eastern Province. Immediately following the Gulf War, Aartco was called upon to repair and reinstate numerous damaged cable circuits in Kuwait.

With most high voltage cable installations, parallel communications systems are also installed for voice and data transfer between Substations along with protection signaling and SCADA systems. One of the most modern methods of providing this communication link is by the use of Fiber Optic cables and Aartco has chosen to specialize in this field.

This division takes responsibility for the safe handling and installation of cables, then performs the jointing and terminating. The technique is influenced in each case by instructions provided by the cable manufacturer. This division routinely performs the mandatory testing and commissioning prior to handing over completed cable circuits to the client. In addition to power cables, activity usually includes the installation of communication and control cables. In the past, this took the form of copper wire pilot cable. Today, fiber optic cable is generally used and Aartco has the tools and know how to install, test and commission these cables. Independent of high voltage projects, this division is sometimes called on to install fiber optic cable for clients in the field of telecommunication. This division currently has a contract with SEC-EOA for the emergency repair of all oil filled and pipe type cables in the SEC-EOA system in the 115-230-380kV range. The service is rarely needed but readiness to serve must be assured at all times. Other contractors and cable manufacturers in the region rely on Aartco's HV Cables Division to terminate and test their cable installations.

By providing Civil Design and Installation capabilities, along with skilled Engineers and Technicians for splicing, termination works and testing using the latest fusion splicing equipment with video recording facilities, Aartco provides complete turnkey solutions in this highly specialized field.
